The Green Lantern: Comic Book Superhero or Golfing Legend?

What started as a prank has turned into superstition of epic proportions. In hosting the opening tournament of the season, Andy Weyer handed out golf balls to the competition marked with various mental ailments like trypophobia (fear of holes), ornithophobia (fear of birdies...especially eagles), and ferrumphobia (fear of irons). Meanwhile, Weyer's ball was labeled "Green Lantern" -- the comic book superhero that combats evil without fear. As it turns out, the Green Lantern lit the way to the winner's circle in not one but three tournaments.

While most of the field lost their "A-Dub" balls on the front nine at Eagle Ridge, Weyer somehow managed to last six rounds and 105 holes before finally losing a Green Lantern ball. That steady play helped overcome a sudden death playoff with Jeb Boss at the kickoff tourney, a chip in on the 18th hole from Bryan Segale at Harding Park, and stiff competition from Todd Stock and Joe Rainero at Oakhurst.

With the Green Lantern ball MIA in someone's backyard, will Weyer revert to a more traditional golf ball marking? "Hell no," said Weyer. "As soon as I sliced it O.B. on the 15th at Oakhurst, I grabbed a Sharpie, tatted another Pro V1 with 'Green Lantern,' and saved bogey. Let's not forget that I'm chasing my second Masters title at Saddle Creek later this month and third POTY this season. Right now, I'm focused on three things: green jackets, green faces, and Green Lanterns."

CEGA's other members aren't so quick to write-off 2015 as the "Year of the Weyer" just yet. Rainero enters the Masters as the perrenial favorite with two titles and 16 strokes under his belt. Saddle Creek host Tim Netherton logged a tune-up round at Oakhurst in anticipation of his next full event. Either Stock or Boss could leapfrog Weyer with a win at the Masters. And rumors are beginning to surface that tour vets Scott Farrar, Brian Leffler, Kevin Reilly, and Sadegh Ghorban are threatening to come out of retirement if Weyer's run doesn't come to an end.

So only time will tell if the Green Lantern comes out on top at the end of this story.
